ABOUT THE PIECES:

Blink: a lost installation

This installation piece unearths a lost city made up of lost things. Detailed puppets,

objects, and music combine in this exploration of loss and time. This piece is being

developed through the generous support of the Jim Henson Foundation and the Seattle

Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, and will premiere as an evening-length piece in 2012.

When You Point at the Moon

An Eastern moon myth warns children to “Never point at the moon or the moon will cut

your ears off!” Inspired by this warning, the piece follows a young boy, the moon, and

the fateful gesture that brings them together. Told in the spirit of a cautionary tale for

adults, this one-man show blends puppetry, sound effects, and a live actor. After

premiering at On the Boards’ 2011 NW New Works Festival in June, When You Point at

the Moon has since toured to Portland and Taipei. This show will expand to an eveninglength

version in 2012, combining multiple moon myths from around the world.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES:

Kyle Loven is currently a Seattle-based artist. His image-driven work combines puppetry,

projections, objects, and other art forms with live actors. In addition to his original creations,

Kyle has worked most extensively with Michael Sommers and Susan Haas’ Open Eye Figure

Theatre but has also performed with Theatre de la Jeune Lune and The Children’s Theatre

Company. His original work has been seen in Amsterdam, Taipei, New York, Minneapolis,

Portland, Orlando, and Seattle. Kyle is the recipient of grants from the Jim Henson Foundation,

4Culture, Artist Trust, and the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs.

Jessica Hatlo is a collaborative performance artist specializing in new, generative and crossdisciplinary

work. Collaborators include 14/48, Hedgebrook Women’s Playwright Festival,

Implied Violence, the Satori Group, Kyle Loven, Jessica Jobaris, and Rosa Vissers. Hatlo was a

member/co-artistic director of Washington Ensemble Theatre for 5 years. The Ensemble will be

producing the world premiere of her play STUCK in March 2012. Hatlo and Rosa Vissers’

collaboration PERPETUUM|Mobile will present their performance installation Ora et Labora as

part of Next Fest NW at Velocity Dance Center December 9-11, 2011. Hatlo is also the program

director of Queer Teen Ensemble Theatre (QTET) a Seattle based program for LGBTQ youth.

Kevin Heard is a sound designer and audio engineer currently based in Seattle. Kevin has

worked with many local companies in varying capacities including Seattle Rep, Book-It, Seattle

Shakes, Annex Theatre, and Contemporary Classics.

Nick Hubbard is a Seattle-based performance artist who creates images with shadow theater and

puppetry. He has appeared on local stages including On the Boards, Live Girls!, and Theatre Off

Jackson. He has collaborated with local puppet creator Brian Kooser and playwright Wes

Andrews, and has worked with Jean Enticknap’s Thistle Theatre.

George Maurer is best known as one of Minnesota’s premier jazz pianists, but his musical

collaborations have taken him around the globe as a performer, arranger, and composer. He has

shared the stage with Eric Clapton, arranged music for the Chiffons and written two original

scores for Saint Paul City Ballet. His repertoire includes indie movie soundtracks, 15 CDs,

arrangements for everyone from gospel choirs to rock icons and an always-full itinerary of

George Maurer Trio, Group, and Variety Band performances.

Gabrielle Schutz has been an active member of Seattle’s artistic community since 2007 and has

collaborated with a myriad of companies and artists as a Chorographer, Theatrical Director and

solo Performance Artist. She is currently the Managing Director of Absurd Reality Theatre,

where she has produced and facilitated the creation of several new works in Theatre and Dance.

Gabrielle holds a BA in Theatre from Mesa State College in Colorado.
