Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, and will premiere as an evening-length piece in 2012.

&
When You Point at the Moon
An Eastern moon myth warns children to “Never point at the moon or the moon will cut
your ears off!” Inspired by this warning, the piece follows a young boy, the moon, and
the fateful gesture that brings them together. Told in the spirit of a cautionary tale for
adults, this one-man show blends puppetry, sound effects, and a live actor. After
premiering at On the Boards’ 2011 NW New Works Festival in June, When You Point at
the Moon has since toured to Portland and Taipei. This show will expand to an eveninglength
version in 2012, combining multiple moon myths from around the world.

Meeting: Sunday, December 4, 2011
Join us! On December 4 starting at 4:15 pm, at the Sunset Hill Community Club (3003 NW 66th Street, Seattle, WA) we will be gathering for our next guild meeting.
First off are general proceedings and updates from the Executive Board.
Then, artists Carol Wolfe Clay and Ki Gottberg sit down with us to share reflections on their process in creating their play for actors and puppets, little world, including a look at the puppets designed and built by Carol:
“Four years ago Carol Wolfe Clay and Ki Gottberg, longtime friends and collaborators in the world of theatre, found themselves living on the same floor in different wards of Seattle Children’s hospital. One had a child who was now quadriplegic; the other, battling life-threatening cancer. These two mothers found themselves lost in the deep and complicated process of grief. Clay retreated to her studio, creating a little world of her own full of handmade puppets; Gottberg brought this little world to life, writing a play inspired by this physical world and reflective of their shared experiences.” (from the production program)
As a special bonus, come at 3pm and see Thistle Theatre’s production of Merry Chris Mouse at no charge:
“A brown mouse family, without a piece of cheese to its name, finds a new home in the wall of a child’s playroom. While exploring, Christine and Christopher discover a tiny white mouse in a cage…plans for a rescue ensue! This is an original heartwarming story of sharing at holiday time. Original songs by Sue Ennis including ‘Carving the Christmas Cheese’. (http://www.thistletheatre.org
Additionally, two collections of puppetry books will be for sale at the meeting. You won’t want to miss it!

“little world” at Lee Center
little world
Developed from an original design and puppets by Carol Wolfe Clay
Written and directed by Ki Gottberg
In 2007, Clay’s teenage son became quadriplegic in a high school wrestling accident. Six weeks later Gottberg’s 12-year-old daughter was diagnosed with stage 3B cancer. Inexplicably, they found themselves living on the same floor in different wards at Children’s Hospital, lost in the deep and complicated processes of grief. Four years later, Clay and Gottberg teamed up to create a whimsical, funny, and illuminating theater piece out of a part of the traumatic experience, the part having to do with grief. Highlighting their shared interest in new ways of making theatre, the generative process began with Clay creating a “little world,” a dynamic set full of handmade puppets; Gottberg then wrote a play inspired by this physical world and reflective of their shared experiences; and now, this “little world” comes to life…
…A woman creates and retreats to a little world of her own… a safe place where she can hide from all that is cruel. But this new world conjures up characters who emerge playfully, yet ultimately confront and challenge her. Featuring actors Suzy Hunt, Kate Wisniewski, Cecelia Frye and Jena Cane, this production is one hour in length and is presented under the auspices of the Actors’ Equity Association Members’ Project Code. (Not suitable for children under 10.)
“little world” is supported by a Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs CityArtist Projects 2011 grant.

“Harold and the Purple Crayon” at Seattle Children’s Theatre
Harold and the Purple Crayon
Based on the books by Crockett Johnson
All Rights Reserved by The Estate of Ruth Krauss
Stewart J. Edelstein, Executor
- SEP 22 – OCT 30
- All Ages – visual storytelling and accessible language
- Charlotte Martin Theatre
A Note from Artistic Director Linda Hartzell:
Harold is a child’s icon for playfulness. Bringing him to stage with animation, puppetry and music bridges the book-theatre connection for young children. Hopefully this will inspire our earliest readers and earliest theatre patrons. I’m certain the dynamic special effects and nostalgia of the story will intrigue older youth.
Thistle Theatre presents “Jack and the Beanstalk”
Thistle Theatre, a puppet theatre for families presents:
Jack and the Beanstalk
Based on an old English version of the story, Jack trades his family’s cow for five colored beans. An
amazing adventure ensues when Jack climbs to the top of the beanstalk and becomes a slave to the
cyclops wife of the fee-fi-fo-fum giant. A golden hen, a magic singing harp, a green fairy and a fool
add to the musical merriment.
Brian Stabile, Lisa A. Haslbauer and Ben Burris are the puppeteers in this production directed by
Jean Enticknap. The story was adapted by Sue Ennis and Jean Enticknap with music and songs by
Sue Ennis. The puppets were designed and built by Brian Kooser with costumes by Jean Enticknap.
