Description of Story:

Mr.Yama, a wealthy miser, meets a young girl who has climbed his cherry tree to retrieve her kite. Unwilling to share any of the tree’s bounty, Mr. Yama accidentally swallows a cherry pit and a tree grows out of his head! A bizarre series of events follow including encounters with mythical Japanese creatures including a Tengu (a mountain goblin), an Oni (ogre) and a serpent! Humor, danger and excitement fill this tall tale told with Bunraku, shadow and blacklight puppets.

Thistle Theatre is the only performing arts organization in the Pacific Northwest that specializes in Bunraku puppets, an ancient Japanese style of puppetry. The puppeteers, dressed head-to-toe in black to suggest invisibility, operate all of the character’s limbs by hand from behind. Lisa Haslbauer, Brian Stabile and Gina Wilhelm are the puppeteers in the production directed by Jean Enticknap.

“I am in the process of installing our 2011 New Acquisitions exhibit, highlighting a selection of our latest gifts to the Museum in the past year. Highlights include a wonderful selection of Indonesian wayang golek andkayu puppets, two wonderful marionettes by early UW puppet master Alanson ‘Lance’ Davis (1909-1976), three 19th century Chinese marionettes, and “Fire Bird” by Debbie Hammond. Come visit this West Sound Treasure. If you have never been you are in for a treat. Leave your car in Seattle, just a short walk from the ferry. Come for Bremerton’s First Friday Art Walk (Feb. 3rd, 5-8 pm) or visit us during our regular open hours, Wednesday through Saturday, 11 – 4. This new exhibit will be on display through April, 2012.”

Our local guild, the Puppeteers of Puget Sound, is holding the annual post-holiday potluck. Please join us at Jean Mattson’s house for good food, talk of puppets, and an opportunity to enjoy the beginning of another year with our community. Per tradition, we will also be voting on new officers for the guild (if you are interested in serving, contact us at puppeteersofpugetsound@gmail.com).

The spread will be more satisfying if we all contact Jean as soon as possible to let her know what we’ll be bringing. E-mail is best, and be sure to cc Nick Hubbard, who is helping to organize the event.
